童年在乐道院
我1936年生于潍县乐道院医院，解放前人们惯称“洋楼”，我的童年就是在这里度过的。乐道院由医院、学校、基督教会组成，医院是一所教会医院，即现在的潍坊市人民医院。抗日战争前医院院长是一位美国人姓巴的护士，由她全面管理医院工作，当时最有名的大夫也是美国人，中国人叫他梅三，日本人来后他们相继回国。当时我父亲负责药局工作，还兼任麻醉和放射科工作，因为那时人手很少，潍县解放时全院只有72名工作人员，当时胃大部切除术就算是大手术了，最大型的医疗设备是一台10毫安的X光机，那时的病房就是保留至今的医院东北角的十字形乐道院楼，各科病人都住在那里。门诊设在医院西北角一个不太大的厅房里，在那里我曾不止一次地见过霍乱、狂犬病、黑热病等许多病人，从小的耳濡目染使我后来走上了从医之路。当时医院的环境很幽静，鸟儿会在离地面两米多高的树杈上筑巢，也无人扑捉。晚饭后母亲常带我到医院北大门玩，灯光下时常有几只小刺猥出现，牠们不怕人，跟我们玩够了便各自慢慢离去，因为喜欢所以大家从来不伤害牠们。
好景不长，不久（大约在1942年）大多数医护人员被日本人赶出了医院，我们全家搬到了潍县南关大街，靠父亲开小诊所度日，直至日本投降后才搬回医院。
广文中学及广文附小都是教会学校，校长是寿光人黄乐德牧师，他也是乐道院院长。黄院长的儿子黄安慰是一名多才多艺的教务人员，善讲故事，很受人们爱戴。广文中学是潍坊二中的前身，培养了不少优秀学子，是一所口碑很好的中学。记忆特别深刻的广文中学钟楼上那口大钟，它那悦耳的嗡嗡声响彻潍县城，极具特色。现已放在潍县集中营纪念馆陈列展出。还有上小学三年级时学校里发放救济物资，这是国际救济总署分配来的东西，小学生排队点名领取，当我跑过去接物品时被砸到在地，惹得大家捧腹大笑一场，抱着包裹到僻静处打开一看，竟是100多条十分精美的西服领带。还有一次抽签对号领物，每人一油筐旧皮鞋，多是一些女式高跟鞋，我和另一位同学还各分到一只一尺多长的男式大皮鞋，因这刚好是同一双鞋，我们俩互不相让，谁也不舍得把自己的一只送给对方，后来听说他那一只放在虞河里漂走了，我那一只也扔掉了。
基督教会设有圣经学院和识字班等单位，有美国人狄乐播牧师和黄乐德牧师及一批传教士传道布教。使我记忆尤深的是被称作“南外国园子”的院落，里面住着美国牧师，每家住一座小楼，环境十分幽静，外人很少入内。不少外国人最后留在了中国，在“南外国园子”可见到不少他们的卧式墓碑。还有座落在乐道院北门西侧的那座大教堂，它的建筑别具一格，既华丽又庄重，每年的圣诞节这里都有盛大的聚会，讲圣经，唱诗篇，讲故事，有很漂亮的圣诞树和由小朋友化妆的圣诞老人，到会每人还会分到一包糖果，来的小朋友特别多。晚间大家一起在外面玩，有的外国人还爬上楼顶高唱英文赞美诗。平时晚上我一个人是不敢到院子里去的，十分害怕黑影，但在圣诞夜却是一点也不害怕，直玩到深夜才肯回家，十分开心。时过境迁，大教堂虽早已被拆除，但使人欣慰的是还有照片可见。
乐道院是世界闻名的潍县集中营的所在地，数千名外国侨民在这里受尽了日本军国主义的百般凌辱和奴役，日本投降时，我曾在乐道院北门外亲历各国侨民得知获得自由时那欢呼跳跃，万分激动的感人场面。还有外国人用白布铺在广场上作成大十字，引导自己飞机前来空投物资的壮观。还见到一些外国人与我们的风俗习惯大不相同，他们晚辈可以直呼自己长辈的名字，不分男女老幼一起在虞河里裸泳等新奇的事。解放前夕外国人都纷纷回国，不少人已在中国住了大半辈子了，他们恋恋不舍地含泪而去。
潍县解放时，我和广文附小的同学们一起传唱着‘你是灯塔’、‘解放区的天’、‘咱们工人有力量’、‘跟***走’等革命歌曲，戴着大红花，拿着红绸子扭秧歌欢庆解放的情景，更是我终生难忘的美好记忆。
